Armed with a kettle and a cup, this 'chaiwali' is all set to contest in the coming MCD elections. Kaushalya Devi, 38, is a resident of slums of Kasturbanagar and the only source of income for her family is a tea shop near Eros Cinema at Jangpura.
She works from 6 in the morning till 10 in the night to feed five of her children. She has got a ticket from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and she is ready to challenge the councillor aspirants of her area.
"I don't have money. I know people will laugh at our condition, but we have seen poverty. We have seen the struggle for livelihood, from which most of the Delhi residents are going through. I want to change this situation. I want to give basic amenities to poor people," said Kaushalya.
Apart from door to door campaigns, Kaushalya also seek votes from women of her locality by offering free tea.
"This is what I have to offer when people come to meet me. I am a 'chaiwali' and I am proud of it. People are supporting me and I am hopeful for a win," said Kaushalya.
Her husband Gopal stays with her like a shadow during the election campaign and at their tea shop. He is also quite famous in the locality for being helpful to the neighbours.
"I know people spent a lot of money in the elections. But we are contesting with courage, confidence and integrity. We are here to serve the poor people. People like us," said Gopal.
